The pirate survival game Windrose has officially set sail into Steam Next Fest with a brand-new playable demo, giving players their first hands-on look at the upcoming co-op adventure on the high seas.
The limited demo is available now on Steam and offers a focused slice of the full game, including exploration, naval combat, early quests, and survival systems.
Whatโs Included in the Demo
According to the developers, the demo features roughly 4โ6 hours of gameplay, though players can take their time since thereโs no playtime limit. The build includes:
- The first three islands of the Archipelago
- Your first ship, complete with naval combat and boarding
- Early quests and core survival mechanics
- A selection of weapons, enemies, and crafting systems
Co-op is supported through player-hosted sessions for up to four players, but dedicated servers will not be available until Early Access. Progress made in the demo will not carry over to the full release.
Exclusive Early Access Reward
Players who simply launch the demo during Next Fest will unlock a decorative spyglass that can be used to customize their pirate base when Early Access begins.
Connectivity Issues Under Investigation
The developers also noted that some players may encounter co-op disconnects and networking issues during the demo period. The team says a fix is already being worked on and apologized for the inconvenience.
A New Direction for the Game
The demo arrives alongside a broader shift in the projectโs vision. The gameโpreviously known under a different nameโhas been rebranded as Windrose and is now focused on a PvE co-op survival experience rather than an MMO-style live service.
The new direction emphasizes:
- Exploration and treasure hunting
- Solo or small-group co-op play
- Offline support and dedicated servers (planned for Early Access)
- A traditional buy-to-play model
The developers say the change allows them to deliver a more polished and flexible survival experience while keeping the pirate fantasy at the core.
A Pirate Survival Worth Watching
Set in an alternate Age of Piracy, Windrose blends base building, crafting, souls-like combat, and ship-to-ship battles across a procedurally generated world. Players can sail between islands, fight bosses, gather a crew, and plunder treasure either solo or with friends.
With its Next Fest demo now live and Early Access on the horizon, Windrose is shaping up to be one of the more ambitious co-op survival titles for pirate fans.
